Greed

Wati became really greedy! She also knew that we needed her to care for my mum as we didn’t change her though her agent did come by to counsel her. Counselling maids, to me, is a really damn waste of time!

It’s now slightly past 2 months since my sister caught her with the mobile phone she bought using my mum’s money. Wati even stole the prepaid SIM card in my mum’s mobile, another $30 so she can top up the card. As my husband had purchased the prepaid SIM card previously, I contacted Singtel to terminate the card.

She even raked up over S$1000 on overseas calls to her boyfriend by using the house phone. She would take the cordless into the toilet to make the call when there is no visitor. Long ago one of my Indonesian maids also did a similar thing. Each day right after I leave my home, she would pick up the phone to call Indonesia – not sure who she called. I only found out when the bill came and I sent her to her agent immediately. Of course I never recovered the expenses incurred!

Anyway, as I visited my mum at home about 2 – 3 times a week, Wati didn’t show any indifference. It’s as if she did not do anything wrong or everything was ok ie she is at my mum’s house to take care of my mum.

My mum was again hospitalized earlier this month so Wati had to again accompany my mum during my mum’s hospital stay. This time, she crossed the line. She stole a mobile phone belonging to a patient next to my mum’s bed. How stupid can she be? I supposed she didn’t think about ever being punished by the police. So far, my sister only counseled her. Words = no weight!!

I told my sister no point in pressing charges even if she has a glimmer of hope that she could recover the stolen money and also the overseas call charges. Even if Wati gets charged, so what?? She’d probably spent maybe 2 weeks in jail, then she is repatriated. She can no longer work in Singapore – big deal! There is Hong Kong, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia where she can still work! She won’t feel the heat!

In fact, press charges and the employer will be so much poorer! As an employer, you would still need to pay the levy while the maid is being housed and fed in the embassy!

An Ungrateful Wati

Recently we found out that Wati had been stealing from my mum!  My mum’s been losing small amounts of money but we thought that my mum may have forgotten that she had spent the money. Both she and Wati had been going out for their walks and even to the library frequently.

My mum trusted Wati and she even handed money to Wati to keep in my mum’s purse. Wati became greedy. When my mum said she lost close to $300 at one go, I immediately suspected Wati though I didn’t say so to my mum. My mum had trusted Wati a bit too much!!  As far as I am concerned, if there is a theft in the home, 95% would be by the maid or the maid had a part to play.  I may seem biased but there is truth. I’ve read in the papers previously that there were instances when the maid played the victim when there was robbery in their employer’s house.

My mum got sick and was hospitalized since 24 May for 2 weeks.  It was by chance that my sister found out that Wati was the thief.  My sister caught her red-handed!!

During one of my sister’s visit to the hospital, the curtain around my mum’s bed was closed as the nurse and the Wati attended to her. My sister heard the beeping of a mobile phone. Then she saw Wati came out of my mum’s cubicle to answer the sms. After the nurse draw the curtain, Wati then excused herself supposedly to go to the toilet.

My sister then trailed her to the toilet without Wati knowing - like a tv drama.  My sister watches the Chinese dramas quite often :)   As soon as Wati got into a cubicle, my sister went into the one next to her. Wati made a call to someone then she went out of the toilet and back to my mum, pretending as if she really had to answer nature’s call.

My sister then went to the ward also pretending as if nothing happened though she was “boiling” inside! As Wati was in the hospital to take care of my mum, we didn’t want to question her yet though the family now knows what she had done.

Wati did not show any sign of remorse or guilt. It’s as if it was her right to taking the money!

My Mum's Maid - Wati

My mum is now over 80 years old and never had a maid to care for her before until recently. When my mum had a fall recently and fractured her bones, she became wheelchair bound. Since there was no one to be with her round the clock, we decided to employ a maid.

My sister selected Wait, trained her to cook simple dishes for my mum and my nephew guided Wati on how to care for my mum and another sister taught her how to do the cleaning of the house.  Anyway, Wati was highly recommended by her maid agent.
Wati came on 30 January 2011 and I must say she was very well taken care of. My nephew usually brings my mum and Wati to restaurants and gaveWati the freedom to choose whatever she wants to eat from the menu. Wati only drink fruit juices when she goes out. I dont even order a canned drink!

Wati hardly do much housework in the house as she practically just sat around my mum, sleeps as soon as my mum does. During the day, Wati will push my mum in her wheelchair around the HDB hub area.

This is one of Wati’s friend who, I feel is a bad influence to her and then again, Wati is no angel!  Wati is in fact a devil in disguise!!
